Messy Business

Why bother being a doctor when you can become a shiny, new Physician Associate

More gallows humour this one, than “ha, ha, that’s a good one, would you belive it”.

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is after a physician associate.

A physical whattie? I hear you say.

You know. Pseudo doctor types. Can do a bit of this and a bit of that after a couple of years training.

Big deal. What’s the story? They’ve been around for a few years now, and provide a useful function – helping to take the pressure off juniors.

Well the story is that this particular job ad is looking for a £50k a year physician associate, and offers 33 days annual leave.

You’ve gotta climb quite high up the old medical ladder as a doctor before anyone offers you this much.

As one med reg on Facebook said of this job ad: “An absolute kick in the guts considering the time, money, blood, sweat and tears it takes to got through medical school and the early years of generic training and exams. What does this represent? I feel sick to my stomach.”

And there was me thinking they were a cheap way to bolster the medical workforce….
