A single NHS trust has issued hospital patients and relatives with more than 18,600 parking penalties in only 12 months.
The astonishing figure emerged in an investigation into how much the sick, their visitors and NHS workers are being punished by extortionate fines and clamping policies.
Last year University Hospitals Birmingham, which runs three hospitals, handed out 18,651 fines – the equivalent of 51 a day. This is more than double the number of tickets handed out by the second-worst offender, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, which issued 9,008 tickets
The survey by Which? also found that another trust, St George’s in Tooting, South London, clamped 545 cars last year, far more than any other. Sheffield Teaching Hospital clamped 389 vehicles over the same period.
