NHS service reconfigurations surge expected

The NHS looks set to see a surge of major changes to hospital services in the next 18 months after the government effectively lifted its moratorium on reconfiguration.

Reconfiguration guidance issued by the Department of Health last week told strategic health authorities to rule by 31 October on whether each existing plan in their region can go ahead.

It says where consultation has started or finished, or changes have begun, the guidance “does not necessarily mean… plans should be reversed”. In these cases, the guidance says: “If local stakeholders or individuals have concerns, they will need to provide valid and robust evidence to support their position.”

When asked, eight out of 10 SHAs provided details of 25 reconfiguration plans, many of which have already begun or have passed consultation stage.
