A doctor has been struck off after he took on private clients overseas while telling NHS bosses he was busy working for charity.
Essam Aly, 55, carried out operations while on a paid career break from his £95,000-a-year post as an anaesthetist at the Queen’s Hospital in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, telling employers he was volunteering in his native Egypt.
When he feared he would be exposed, Dr Aly roped in a junior doctor to help send forged emails to senior NHS staff, a Medical Practitioners Tribunal found.
Last year Dr Aly was forced to hand over his entire £550,000 estate to ex-wife Enas in a high profile divorce ruling. The father-of-two was accused of ‘washing his hands’ of his family.
