The campaign for music in theatre starts here

By Mike Broad - 20th April 2010 1:20 pm

I remember, back in the day, organising a survey on what surgeons listened to while operating. We found that the likes of Pink Floyd, Paul Weller and The Clash had largely replaced classical music as the accompaniment of choice.

Then came the toughening up in the copyright laws so that to play music in public you needed a copyright licence.

Among its many victims were surgeons who were told by their trusts that they could no longer play music in theatre.

Well, the fight back has begun - a surgeon tells me that they’ve checked with the Performing Right Society and all patient areas, including theatres, are exempt from licence requirements. They’re lobbying their trust to re-introduce the right to listen to music while operating.

I feel my role is to develop a play list for the campaign. Here’s my opening gambit:

1. Don’t leave me this way (The Communards)

2. If I could turn back time (Cher)

3. The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel)

4. Pump up the Volume (MARRS)

I think we need a full 12-song sound track. Got any more suggestions?

  1. Flip flop says:

Managers killed the radio star (Biggles). Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  2. Kathy Teale says:

How about “It seems like a long time……………” By Rod Stewart. Great for my neurosurgery list.

  3. Nick Odom says:

There was an old song in the ’50s (shows my age): “open up your heart and let the sun shine in.” Great for my specialty (cardiothoracic).

  4. Bellerophon says:

    My play list includes

The first cut is the deepest
    Who wants to live forever

  5. radman says:

A whiter shade of pale procul harem
    Burn Deep Purple
    allright now Free

    (in that order)
