Messy Business

Needing your blue inhaler more than twice a week is dangerous

Have you heard the Inhaler Song yet?

Think NHS England’s Clinical Entrepreneur, Tapas Mukherjee, rather than Calvin Harris or Bruno Mars.

Since its launch in September it’s been viewed over 35,000 times.

Dr Mukherjee had the idea when working on rotation at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.

Studies show that 80% of patients don’t know how to use an inhaler correctly and that using a blue inhaler more than twice a week is associated with an increased risk of death.

He also noticed that not all the doctors were using the asthma guidelines.

So, he rewrote the trust guidelines to make them more appealing and useful, and released a relevant song – obviously!?

It aims to reduce the number of patients who are reliant on their emergency blue inhaler, encouraging them to seek advice from a doctor or nurse, and switch to a regular inhaler if possible.
