“We are supportive of the GMC’s consultation on plans to develop a Medical Licencing Assessment, as the question of a UK-wide common standard for undergraduates has been posed for some time.
“It will help to reassure patients that all doctors qualifying in the UK, or coming from overseas, have achieved a standard level of achievement.
“UK medical schools have a good reputation for fostering brilliant and successful graduates, and a Medical Licencing Assessment should help to maintain this high standard.
“There are some questions the consultation should address about who will bear the costs, and also to ensure students are not over-assessed if this is introduced.”

“A single Medical Licensing Assessment would help provide employers, and patients, with clearer assurance that all doctors practicing in the UK are working to the same standards of knowledge, skills and preparedness.
“It would also give common recognition to the important contribution of overseas trained doctors through the assurance systems of the professional regulator.”
